ocr: Variable sweep wings allow the pilot to change from a straight wing to a back swept wing depending on the situation. Straight wings provide more lift and control. This IS important during take off/landing and low speed flight. For faster speeds, back swept wings are better. The F-14 IS an aircraft with variable sweep wings.
